World Cup 2022: Japan Stun Germany with Late Strikes at World Cup

Japan have caused a major upset at the 2022 World Cup by defeating Germany in their Group E opener. The Blue Samurai won 2-1.

Japan meets the four-time Champion, Germany in Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, on Wednesday (23/11/2022) night. Ilkay Gundogan scored from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute after David Raum was brought down in the box by Shuichi Gonda.

The Germans dominated the first half with 81% possession and 13 attempts on goal to Japan's one effort, which didn't find the target. Japan turned up the heat in the 75th minute, and with the help from substitute Ritsu Doan, they magically found an equalizer from a rebounded shot.

With thanks to Manager Hajime Moriyasu, who made some super substitutions Takuma Asano beat Manuel Neuer from close range and put Japan in front in the 83rd minute. The German camp was absolutely stunned as the referee blew the final whistle, in what will go down as the second-biggest shock of the tournament so far.

Japanese football fans were celebrating on Wednesday (23/11/2022) after their team defeated Germany 2-1 at the World Cup in Qatar.
